A note from the founder

TaskDrop — Free WhatsApp Invoicing for UK Tradespeople.

It's why I built TaskDrop. This page is the unedited reason — what's wrong with the existing tools, what I'm doing differently, and what I've publicly committed to never do.

The opening

Hi, I'm Owen.

I'm not a tradesman. I'll get that out of the way first because most "built for tradies" software starts by lying about that.

I'm a UK sole trader. I built TaskDrop because I watched the invoicing software industry treat tradesmen like a captive market — and I got angry on your behalf.

You've been sold sleek dashboards designed for office workers. Forced into 14-day trials that auto-charge your account. Locked into annual contracts you can't escape mid-job. Told that "subscription plans are great, then watched basic features hide behind "Pro" upgrades that cost £39 a month. We built something different.

None of it was built for someone in a van at 5pm with grease on their hands. None of it was priced for someone who has good months and bad months. And almost none of it was honest.

So I built something that is.

The problem

Here's what's actually broken.

Three specific patterns the invoicing industry uses against you. None of them are accidents — they're business decisions someone made on purpose, knowing you'd pay anyway because what else are you going to do.

01
"Free trial" that's a credit card trap.
You enter your card to "try it free for 14 days." On day 15, £19 leaves your account whether you used it or not. Half the time you've forgotten you signed up. Industry-standard practice. Designed to convert "I'll think about it" into "I'm paying for something I forgot I had."
02
"subscription plans hiding the actual product.
a monthly fee just to use it. Need to convert a quote to an invoice? That's Pro — £39. Want payment reminders? Pro. Customer address book? Pro. The "Starter" plan exists to make Pro feel like a reasonable upgrade. It's a price-anchoring tactic, not a product tier.
03
Annual contracts you can't escape.
Sign up monthly, find out three weeks in that the upgrade you actually need is annual-only. Cancellation hidden behind a phone call you can never get on. By the time you've worked out how to leave, you've paid for another quarter you didn't use.

None of these are bugs. They're the business model.

The fix

What I'm building instead.

TaskDrop is free, forever. We earn £80/quarter when you submit an MTD return to HMRC. Invoicing and TaskDrop Pay are free forever. If you never use MTD, you'll never give us a penny. That's the whole deal. No asterisks.

  • Free WhatsApp invoicing, forever. Quote, invoice, expense tracking, MTD dashboard. No tier. No subscription. No usage cap that suddenly demands payment.
  • We earn £80/quarter when tradespeople submit MTD returns to HMRC. TaskDrop Pay is completely free.hat's our whole revenue model. If you only take bank transfers, you'll never give us a penny.
  • No app to install. Lives entirely inside WhatsApp — the app you already use, with the customers you already chat to. Voice notes work. Buttons work. No "learn our system."
  • TaskDrop Pay. Your bank details appear on every invoice — customers pay directly to your account via bank transfer. No card machine, no chargebacks, no processing fees.
  • HMRC-compliant invoicing. MTD ITSA submission (sandbox-tested, production credentials applied for). Every document carries a sequential reference number. MTD ITSA submission is built and sandbox-tested. Production credentials have been applied for — submissions will go live once approved. The only MTD ITSA software built around WhatsApp.
  • Cancel any time. No phone call. No retention dance. Visit your dashboard, tap Account → Your data rights, and delete everything instantly.
Who's behind this

It's just me.

I'm Owen. I'm a UK sole trader operating out of the North East. Not a Silicon Valley startup. Not a team of 20. Not a venture-backed scale-up. One person, one product, one bank account.

I file my own taxes. I chase my own invoices. I know what it's like to wonder when a client is finally going to pay. I'm not a tradesman, but I'm somebody who runs a small UK business — and that's enough to know what tradesmen need is software that respects them.
