// HMRC INVOICE REQUIREMENTS
What HMRC Requires
on Every Invoice
Mandatory for all UK invoices
HMRC requires specific information on invoices issued by UK businesses. If your invoice is missing any of these, it may not be accepted as a valid record for tax purposes — and customers can legally withhold payment on an invalid invoice.
- A unique, sequential invoice number (INV-001, INV-002 etc.)
- Your business name and address
- Your customer's name and address
- Date the invoice was issued
- Clear description of the goods or services supplied
- The total amount charged (excluding VAT)
- If VAT registered: VAT amount charged and your VAT registration number
Making Tax Digital — April 2026
From April 2026, sole traders earning over £50,000 must keep digital income records and submit quarterly summaries to HMRC. Your invoices must have sequential reference numbers and proper VAT breakdowns — this template has both.

// COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this template really free?
Yes — completely free, no strings attached. Enter your email, we send you the template, you download and use it. We'll send a few follow-up emails about TaskDrop, which you can unsubscribe from anytime.
What format is the template in?
It's a .docx file (Microsoft Word format). You can open it in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, or any word processor. On your phone, Google Docs opens it directly — no download needed.
Is it HMRC compliant?
Yes. The template includes all mandatory HMRC invoice fields: sequential invoice number, issue date, business name and address, customer details, description of work, subtotal, VAT breakdown (if applicable), and total. For full details, see
HMRC's invoicing guidance.
Does it work for CIS jobs?
Yes — there's a CIS section for labour, materials, and the 20% deduction. Just fill in the labour subtotal and materials, and the deduction is shown separately. Your contractor needs to see this clearly on the invoice.
Do I need to be VAT registered to use it?
No. If you're not VAT registered, just leave the VAT row blank and use the total as your final amount. The template works for both VAT-registered and non-VAT-registered tradespeople.
What's TaskDrop and why are you giving this away free?
TaskDrop is an invoicing tool for UK tradespeople — you type INVOICE on WhatsApp and get a professional PDF in 60 seconds. We give the template away because most tradespeople who use it for a few weeks realise they want something faster. It's a fair trade.
