How to find a trustworthy tradesperson
Hiring a tradesperson can feel like a gamble — will they turn up, do a good job, and charge a fair price? This guide walks through how to find a reliable, properly-registered tradesperson, spot the red flags of a cowboy, and make sure the price you’re quoted is fair.

The single best protection is making sure the tradesperson is registered with the right body for their trade. A genuine professional will happily share their number:
- Gas work — must be on the Gas Safe Register. Never let an unregistered person touch gas appliances.
- Electrical work — look for NICEIC, NAPIT or ELECSA registration, especially for anything notifiable under Part P.
- Plumbing & heating — bodies like CIPHE or WaterSafe indicate proper training.
- General building — FMB (Federation of Master Builders), TrustMark or CHAS membership are good signs.
You can usually verify a registration number directly on the relevant body’s website in under a minute.
2. Get more than one quote
For any job beyond a small repair, get two or three written quotes. It’s the easiest way to understand the fair price and avoid being overcharged — and it gives you room to ask why one quote is much higher or lower than the others.
A proper quote should be in writing, itemised, and clear about what’s included (materials, labour, VAT, waste removal). Be wary of a vague verbal figure scribbled on the back of an envelope.
3. Know the red flags of a cowboy
- Pressure to decide on the spot, or to pay a large sum up front in cash.
- No written quote, or refusal to put the price in writing.
- Reluctance to share registration or insurance details.
- A price far below everyone else — sometimes a sign of cut corners or a low-ball that creeps up later.
- A price far above the going rate, banking on you not knowing what’s fair.
- No reviews, no references, no fixed address or proper contact details.
4. Check the price is fair before you commit
Even a registered, well-reviewed tradesperson can quote too high — and if you don’t know the going rate, it’s hard to tell. That’s exactly what our free quote checker is for: enter the trade, the job and the price you’ve been quoted, and it instantly compares it against typical 2026 UK rates for your region and tells you whether it’s fair, high, or a likely rip-off.
